 Whitsundays Sail Learn to Earn (LTE) Program 

 
  1.As an Overseas visitor, can I do the Sail LTE Program if I do not have a Working Holiday Visa   2.What are the chances that I will get employment in the Whitsundays at the end of the LTE Program   3.At the end of the program, what other development will I need to: a) advance in the Whitsundays. b) work overseas.  
  A) You can undertake the 23 day program, however you cannot apply for a job with us at the end of the program. Some guests have done this program because they saw it as a good way to spend 3 weeks sailing and learning in the Whitsundays.   A) We cannot guarantee work, however, if you are diligent during the program, get good results and reports from the Skippers and Crew you work with, there is a good chance you will gain employment.   A) a) as per 4 below.
b) STWC95 which provides the full fire fighting drills and survival at sea elements.  USL Coxswains Ticket.
 
             
 

General Questions about Learning to Sail in the Whitsundays

 
  4) Which courses do I need to do to get a job working on yachts in the Whitsundays.    5) What is the typical itinerary for the 3d 2n Introduction to Sailing Course.   6) Apart from doing the practice on the yacht as part of the course, what am I expected / required to do on-board.  
 
A) We offer the Sail LTE, which consists of the Commercial Crew Course & 2 weeks of commercial consolidation. After this course, you would then undertake your Recreational Ship Licence, which gives you the ticket to drive the tender with passengers to/from the mothership, then Senior First Aid Certificate. You would within 6 months be required to complete your Elements of Shipboard Safety Course.
  A) 1st day, crew induction of the vessel, including safety management systems on board. Afternoon sail handling, winch work & getting underway to overnight stop. Day 2, Swim & Snorkel, then start with intro to nautical charts & publications. Afternoon spent sailing to overnight stop. Day 3, visit to Whitehaven, then intro to weather patterns & reading forecasts, followed by sailing to Airlie Beach. Itineraries will vary depending on weather.   A) Guests are expected to participate in all aspects of running a yacht in safe and orderly fashion. 
This includes helping in the galley, cleaning up, keeping yacht tidy and safe. Doing checks on-board the yacht to see all mechanical and bilge areas components are in good working order.
 
             
  7) Apart from clothing, swimmers, toiletries,& personal belongings do you recommend that I bring other materials to help me get through the Sail Training program  
8)  For the 6 Day 5 night Courses or longer, what happens during the mid week overnight break.
a)  Where do we sleep. b) What meals to we get. c) Can I do Laundry.
 
9) What do I get at the end of the courses insofar as qualifications: a)  Intro to Sailing b)  Crew Certficiate 
 
  A) If you are going to pursue sailing, we recommend you get yourself a reasonable Coastal Jacket and Sailing Gloves. All other materials including workbooks are supplied.   A) a) On the sail training yacht moored in pen at Abel Point Marina. b) Wednesday evening a meal voucher to use at a cafe in Airlie Beach. c) Yes at the marina there is a laundry, showers & toilet facilities.    A) a)Completed Intro Course signed off in your Commercial Seatime Log book & a Learn to Sail Whitsundays Certificate.
b) Commercial Crew Course signed off in your Commercial Seatime Log Book & a Learn to Sail Whitsundays Certificate.
 
             
  10) Which course would you recommend to skipper my own yacht with confidence   11) During the course how much time is available to do other activities, such as snorkelling   12)  Can I do a Scuba Dive while on the Course in the Whitsundays  
  A) 6 day 5 night Crew Course, then further development and practice, because this gives you the skills to navigate your own vessel safely.   A) 3 to 4 hours per trip.  You even get to spend 1 to 2 hours at Whitehaven Beach.
  A) Yes, when we are in the bay near the Dive Boat Tornado, you can go over and do an Introductory or Certified Scuba dive.  
             
  13) Do I need to have a Radio Operators Certificate to take a Bareboat around the Whitsundays   14) What are the minimum and maximum numbers on the Sail Training courses      
  A) No, but highly recommended that you do get this certificate.   A) We run with a minimum of 8 and a maximum of 14 guests and 1 Instructor / Skipper and 1 Crew / Host.
